JOB TITLE: SCHOOL BUS MECHANIC GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB Under general supervision and working alone, performs all major and minor mechanical repairs to the school bus fleet and other school system vehicles. Performs all levels of the preventative maintenance program. Reports to the shop supervisor and/or transportation director. Must provide their own tools DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Diagnoses minor, major and frequently occurring mechanical problems. Repair and replace damaged vehicle body parts. Tests electrical systems and makes necessary repairs. Check and repair doors and lifts. Remove/replace engines, transmissions oil pumps, water pumps, starters and other parts of the engine, suspension system and interiors of the bus. Performs general maintenance as needed. Performs brake jobs Performs all levels of preventative maintenance and documents using proper forms required by Rutherford County Schools and NC Department of Public Instruction. Required to obtain 30 NC Bus Inspection Certification: Performs monthly state inspections and preventative maintenance services on school motor fleet and local owned county vehicles. Must have or obtain Class (B) CDL license. ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS Assists on wrecker calls as needed. Helps with fueling and tire replacement on buses Ability to use iPad, email, texting and Microsoft Word and Excel products TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE High school diploma with some technical training and experience in automotive equipment. Diesel engine experience and/or education a plus KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Must work well with others and be a team player Must be able to think critically and manage time wisely Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate power tools and mechanical equipment. Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently. Must be able to move relatively heavy objects and perform manual labor for an extended time. Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under different levels of stress. Knowledge of school bus operation and maintenance Knowledge of the operating principles of internal combustion engines. Knowledge of the methods of adjusting and repairing the electrical systems of automotive equipment. |
